European Business Biodiversity Campaign

EBBC - Newsletter September 2018

We are happy to present you the most recent Newsletter of the European Business and Biodiversity Campaign (EBBC).

A recently published study by scientists of the University of Würzburg and other German and Australian researchers shows: Bees need it colourful. Scientists so far assumed that habitats with intensive agricultural use are generally bad for bees, because of the exposure to pesticides and the very limited choice of food resources and nesting places. The study now reveals, that bees are well able to thrive in agriculturally used areas, under the condition that they have access to habitat islands with a high plant biodiversity.

In the LIFE Food & Biodiversity project, the Global Nature Fund (GNF) together with six European partners has published seven Biodiversity Fact Sheets. On the one hand, they inform about the effects of different crops in different climatic regions on biodiversity, on the other hand they show how, with very good professional practice and good biodiversity management, animal and plant diversity can also be increased on intensively used agricultural land. Also for the benefit of bees.

More interesting publications, events and news will be presented in the course of this newsletter. Enjoy reading!

Biodiversity Assessment Initiatives

IUCN, ETH Zurich, Nestlé and others are working on taking biodiversity into account in the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). When selecting a production site or designing a product, it is important to select the alternative that has the least negative impact on biodiversity. The current publication "Biodiversity Assessment Initiatives - Guide for Decision Makers", which we have published as a Core Initiative of the UN programme "Sustainable Food Systems", provides an overview of some of the instruments available for this purpose - and how they work.
