In collaboration with
PortugalFoods, IST, the Portuguese partner of the LIFE Food & Biodiversity Project, hosted the event "Food sector and biodiversity - impacts, recommendations and proposals for action" in Lisbon on November 29th.
The event was attended by participants from the food and retail sectors and from external certification and scientific organizations. In the event, the project’s recommendations for the integration of biodiversity in Standards and Labels of Food and Retail sectors was presented, and information was provided on the impacts and best practices of various production systems included in the project’s "
Biodiversity Facts Sheets".
A successful case of implementation of a biodiversity strategy in the production of wine and olive oil in Portugal was presented by the company Esporão, S. A. The NGO Compassion in World Farming presented cases of implementation of Animal Welfare standards as business strategies.
At the end of the meeting, Deolinda Silva (Executive Director of PortugalFoods and member of the project’s Advisory Council) moderated a debate about the implementation of biodiversity strategies and practices in the food and retail sectors.
